Rose on Afghanistan Peace Deal: ‘an incredible step towards peace’

Congressman, who served in Afghanistan and long called for and supported efforts to end the war, applauds President’s efforts

Staten Island, February 29, 2020

Congressman Max Rose, an Army combat veteran who served in the war in Afghanistan, issued the following statement on the Afghanistan peace deal reached today:

“After a generation of warfare and bloodshed, the time to end the war in Afghanistan is now. I applaud the President for his commitment to reaching this historic agreement and bringing our troops home. While this deal is an incredible step toward peace, there is still a long road ahead. The Taliban and Afghan National Government now have the opportunity and responsibility to create a future for their country that includes all Afghans while never again allowing it to become a refuge for terrorists.”

Rose, who serves on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, has long-called for an end to the war in Afghanistan and supported efforts to repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). In a July column, Rose argued that it’s time for Congress to retake it’s Congressional authority to declare war.

Rose served as an active duty officer in Afghanistan from 2012-2013 and earned a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge. Rose is Ranger-qualified, continues to serve in the National Guard, and is the first post-9/11 combat veteran to represent New York City.
